New Library of Congress Design Contract for AESI Associated Engineering Sciences, Inc. Providing Design Support for New Library of Congress Building at Ft. Meade AESI is Contracted as the Design Consultant for the Precast Concrete Manufacturer (Hagerstown, MD Jan. 5, 2004) -- Hagerstown-based Associated Engineering Sciences, Inc. is providing structural engineering design support for a new Library of Congress facility to be located at Fort Meade, Maryland. The project is an expansion for the Library of Congress' Book Storage Module Storage Facility. According to AESI President Wilford Sheng, "We're very pleased to have been approached about this important project. To be able to provide engineering design for the Library of Congress is significant for our small firm." The 14,000 square foot building is a single story, precast concrete addition located at the Library of Congress satellite facility. The building will be used mostly for book storage, and AESI is contracted as the design consultant for the precast concrete manufacturer. "Marietta Structures is the prime concrete manufacturer for this project. AESI is providing the structural engineering design for the precast concrete walls, and other parts of the building's structure." Ohio-based Marietta Structures Corporation is an industry leader in precast concrete construction. The new building's site is located at Fort George G. Meade in Anne Arundel County. This project is part of the Library of Congress High Density Storage Facility, which first began in 2002 to relieve severe crowding of collections at the main Capitol Hill location. The off-site facility is located about 30-miles from the Library of Congress. According to Library of Congress planners, 2,500 items are transferred daily to new Ft. Meade off-site facilities. This new state-of-the-art expansion facility will house materials in an environment that will help preserve the materials for generations. Library of Congress Preservation Directorate staff have worked closely with contractors, and the office of the Architect of the Capitol on specifications for the environmental systems, the selection of preservation-compatible materials for use in buildings construction, and the design and components of storage enclosures that will house books and other materials that will be transferred to the new site. The new module, for which AESI is providing structural engineering support, will provide a cool, safe environment for both paper-based and non-paper-based Library of Congress materials. The Library of Congress is the nation's oldest federal cultural institution, and it serves as the research arm of Congress. It is also the largest library in the world, with more than 126 million items on approximately 530 miles of bookshelves. The collections include nearly 19 million books, 2.6 million recordings, 12 million photographs, 4.8 million maps, and 56 million manuscripts. The Library's mission is to make its resources available and useful to the Congress and to the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations.
