(Hagerstown, MD Oct. 27, 2003) -- The structural engineering design team at Hagerstown-based Associated Engineering Sciences, Inc. will be happily busy for the next few months. The award-winning structural and civil engineering design firm has received a structural engineering contract for a new seven-story 2,200-space parking garage. The pre-cast concrete project is being built in Pittsburgh, at the South Hills Village light-rail station. "Much of the garage is going to be prefabricated at Marietta Structures' plant in Ohio. The Port Authority of Allegheny County facility should go up quickly and be ready for a November 2004 opening," according to Wilford Sheng, President of Associated Engineering Sciences, Inc. "We're very pleased to be able to do the structural design work for this project, it's a major project for us, and one of several new structural design projects that the firm has been asked to undertake." The garage will occupy a footprint of 180-feet by 600-feet, with the major construction work to begin in January. "We're working hard with Marietta Structures on our design of the prefabricated sections of structural concrete, which will be delivered directly to the job site. Everything has to be designed perfectly for the project to be on time for its expected opening date," Sheng said.

Once the Port Authority opens the new garage, the number of park-and-ride spaces for the light-rail station will greatly increase, helping make things easier for Pittsburgh commuters. The Port Authority, after a lengthy study on the status of commuting, announced last year that there was a parking shortage for commuters of more than 1,000 spaces. The new garage project has been estimated to total $25-million for overall construction costs. Walsh Construction of Chicago was selected as the main building contractor, with Marietta Structures of Ohio selected for the manufacturing of the pre-cast concrete. According to AESI's Sheng, "We're a small engineering firm, and for major contractors and manufacturers to select our design team, well, it's a real feather in our cap." Marietta Structures is following AESI's design for hundreds of pre-cast beams, columns, flooring and other components for the garage. "There will be more than 2,000 prefabricated sections of structural concrete that our team is designing. It's a fast project, and cost-effective, plus the garage will be able to be utilized for many scores of years to come."

Associated Engineering Sciences, Inc. was also recently selected to provide the structural engineering for a parking garage project in Erie, Pennsylvania and a major hospital expansion project in Ohio.
